What a rigid board ring box is — and what it has to do
A ring box holds a single ring upright in a fitted slot, so the stone faces the customer the moment the lid lifts. It is the box behind proposals, weddings and everyday fine-jewellery sales, which means it carries an outsized emotional weight for its size.
A rigid board ring box is the light, structured option for retail volume — a magnetic-closure cube wrapped in your paper, with a lined slotted insert — and it ships flat-sided by the thousand.
How a rigid board ring box is built inside
The lower half of the cavity is two covered foam pads set side by side, leaving a slot between them. The ring shank drops into that slot with the stone up, so the ring stands vertical and cannot roll. The inside of the lid is a single flat or gently domed pad with no other structure — its job is to stop the ring lifting in transit.
Fit. The slot is normally cut at 2–4 mm and closes slightly under the foam's own spring, so it grips a 1.5 mm wedding band and a 3 mm signet shank without either rattling or forcing.
In rigid board. In a rigid box the insert is glued to the greyboard base and the wrap paper is turned over the top edge, so the insert height is set to finish a few millimetres below the rim and the lid pad closes the gap. Because the board is wrapped, corner build-up is controlled by the paper weight — a heavier art paper needs a mitred corner to sit flat.

Why rigid board for ring boxes
A rigid (set-up) board box gives a premium, structured feel at a lighter weight and cost than wood, which makes it the practical choice for retail volume and shipping.
A rigid box is a greyboard shell wrapped in your chosen paper or fabric; board weight, wrap paper and closure decide how it feels. We use a heavier board than folding cartons so the box does not flex, and a magnetic or ribbon closure so it opens with a deliberate action rather than a flap.
The wrap paper sets the colour and texture: textured art papers, soft-touch laminates and metallic papers are all standard, and the same paper can be used across a whole retail range for consistency.
It suits e-commerce brands, multi-store retailers and seasonal or gifting ranges where quantity and shipping cost matter.

- Ready tooling library. We hold a range of existing moulded shells in the common jewellery-box sizes. Where one of these fits your piece, there is no mould charge and the box is faster to produce — you choose the finish, lining and logo on a proven shell.
- Fully custom dimensions. Where no standard shell suits — an unusual ring, a signature proportion, a matching family of sizes — we build the box on a wooden shell cut to your dimensions and finished in lacquer or wrapped in your chosen material.

What we check on every rigid board ring box
Before a sample is sent, and again on every bulk run, each rigid board ring box is checked against the same points — the insert is a lined foam insert glued to the board base, so the fit checks below are read against that construction:
- ring stands vertical in the slot with the stone facing the front edge
- slot closes on a 1.5 mm band without the ring tipping
- lid pad meets the stone without pressing it
- hinge on the back edge; lid opens to a stop between 90° and 130°
- the wrap paper has no bubbles, tears or paper build-up at the corners
- lid and base outlines match exactly when closed — same footprint, same corner radius
- insert fills the cavity with no gap to the wall; walls are an even thickness
- rigid board panels have continuous grain or nap with straight, even seams
The most common faults we see in ring boxes bought elsewhere are a slot cut too wide (the ring leans and the stone faces sideways), a lid pad too thick (it presses on the setting), and a shell so light that the box feels like a sample rather than a purchase. Each of those is a specification decision, and we make it with you before the sample.
